Department of Industry and Resources

RedDot Content Management Server (CMS) helps DOIR meet W3C requirements.

About

The Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) is the State Government agency responsible for advancing Western Australia's $27-billion-a-year resources industry. DoIR's role is to enable the continued success of the State's resources industry, creating jobs and prosperity, for the benefit of the Western Australian community. The Department helps to ensure resources development in Western Australia is done in a way that cares for the natural environment and is safe for employees and the public.

DoIR was formed on July 1, 2001 from the amalgamation of the Department of Minerals and Energy and Department of Resources Development.

Challenge

DoIR required a content management system (CMS) to manage the development and delivery of all Web-based content, comprising some 3000 pages of publicly available information, plus their Intranet site.

Some of the issues facing the Department included compliance for delivery of information to W3C compliance, ease of use for content contributors, workflow (process for approval) and scalability of the solution. In addition, the development of and management of standard templates to adhere to corporate identity requirements was also a key consideration.

Solution

The Department undertook an extensive review of some 10 different systems through an independent third-party consulting firm.

The RedDot Content Management Server was selected for DoIR due to the demonstrated rapid return on investment (ROI), ease of use of the product, rapid implementation, scalability, flexible workflow and personalisation to efficiently manage complex content needs. Because RedDot is built on open industry standards and XML-enabled, the browser-based technology offered DoIR the most intuitive content management solution in the industry.

Spherion Technology Solutions, an authorised RedDot CMS Implementation Partner assisted with the implementation of the product.

Major activities undertaken during this project included:

  • Working with DoIR to develop an implementation plan
  • Providing implementation analysis and assistance as required
  • Conducting all end user training including full hands-on training with a demonstration site

Results

RedDot’s software was rapidly implemented, templates were developed, and content is consistently being imported to develop a fully functional and content managed Intranet. This project is the precursor to a full migration of the 3000 pages of content that comprises the http://www.doir.wa.gov.au/ Web site.

"RedDot has exceeded our expectations as a Web Content Management Tool - implementation has allowed us to very quickly build a new site with an automated menu system.  First impressions from the business users are that it will be very easy for them to keep their content up to date, " said Karen Watkins, Project Manager, Department of Industry and Resources.  "The newly released Intranet provides full content management capabilities for the various contributors within the Department, allowing them to focus on the development of content, rather than the technology in having it displayed."

ROI is anticipated through reduced resources in managing the upload of content by making information available to stakeholders more rapidly, while adhering to W3C standards at the same time.
